Why Filmmakers use VFX?

This might be the right question that completely clarifies the basic concept of VFX that Why Filmmakers use VFX? The filmmaker uses VFX because in many movie scenes it is not possible to create those scenes in reality like a Plane crash, unreal creature, accident scene etc. Creating such only not possible but also increases the budget of the movie, makes the filmmaking process more complicated and lengthier.

Let’s take the example of a movie called Jurassic Park (1993) directed by Steven Spielberg, who complete the entire movie for $63 million just visible the dinosaur in the movie. In the most scene, they use robotic dinosaur even though they need to use VFX for some scene.

Most of the non-technical people only know VFX as one single type but actually, VFX has different types and terms. Which are:

1. Computer Generated Image (CGI)

CGI is a VFX technique used in movies. CGI means computer-generated imaging which is an advanced application in the field of computer graphics. As the term itself define that computer Generated Image means a scene or a clip that is completely made by computer animation with the help of CGI software like Autodesk 3D Max, Autodesk Maya, and Blender.

Basically, in CGI there is no need to shoot anything in the real world, we have to create everything on the computer like computer games, 2D 3D animation movies etc.

2. Digital Compositing

Digital Compositing is performed through digital image use, Multiple layer merging, elements from various sources into an image. This is also known as the “green or blue screen” technique. In photoshop as we use the various image, merge them to create a single image, the same technique is also used in video or filmmaking.

An example of Digital Compositing is nowadays the news channel, in all news channels, they shoot the news with a news reporter in a green screen room and later on they replace the green screen with a news studio setup image. It reduces the entire news studio setup cost and its maintenance.

3. Virtual Cinematography

A series of cinematographic techniques are performed in graphic situations. This includes a variety of topics such as shooting real objects, often with a multi-camera setup. Virtual Cinematography is a special effect in a film made with computer graphics. You can also take pictures of real objects to make digital 3D objects as virtual cinematographic creations.

4. Stop Motion Animation

This is a technique in which the animator takes picture of any object frame by frame and when we run all the frames together, it seems that the object is moving or alive.

Stop Motion Animation movies are also very popular but take an enormous time and a lot of patience. This technique required a mini sculpture, toys to creates the illusion of motion.

As an example, you can see Gumby (1995), ParaNorman (2012), Mary and Max (2009).

5. Chroma Keying

Chroma keying is very popular nowadays because of YouTube. A very large number of YouTubers use chroma keying green screen to create their video background.

Generally, the use of chroma-keying is to create a transparent background by removing one single colour majorly green and blue. Because blue and green colour is opposite to skin tone if you remove the blue and green than it will not affect the skin tone at all.
