What is LUTs?

LUT is known as Lookup Table. In short, LUT is pre-defined color preset or a template which is used to color grade the videos instantly. It is pre-defined because in a LUT the color is defined for shadow, mid-tone and high-light, we cannot change the defined colors. For an example, If I color grade a clip from scratch and want to save that color theme as preset for further use. So, in that case, either I have to save it as color preset or convert into a LUT. We cannot transfer the preset from one PC to another but LUTs can be.

Why LUTs?

People use LUTs because it is convenient to use rather than make an entire color space and also saves a lot of time. It also gives you an option to share your color space to others in the form of LUTs. Accept a professional colorist, a normal person can also color grade his video clip with LUTs. So, you don’t need to hire a professional to color grade your footage to look great. But still, it has certain limitation.

Types of LUTs for Color Grading

There are 6 types of LUTs are used for basic colour grading and they are:

1. Transformation LUTs
2. Viewing LUTs
3. Calibration LUTs
4. Log normalization LUTs
5. 1D LUTs
6. 2D LUTs

Moody Orange LUT

This LUT based on orange color so if you have a clip with orange color in the majority of you want a warm orange look, you can use this. It will give you a look of movie like Mad Max, complete orange or High warm tone. This LUT is great for the desert clip, rocky mountain clip.

Old School LUT

This LUT based on 70’s movie looks so if you want that look then you can use this LUT. It will make your clip or video old school. To get proper old school look you must reduce the contract and increase the black a little bit more.

Orange and Teal

Teal and Orange is a very popular look you can see in Hollywood movies. In this, the dark part of the clip appears teal and highlight appears orange. You can use this LUT in almost all type of clips.

Teal Lut

This LUT based on Teal color so if you have a clip with Blue color or dark areas in the majority. You can use this LUT. It is also called as cold look. This LUT is great for the Sea clip, Dark clip or Blue majority clip.

Warm Orange LUT

This LUT is same as Moody orange LUT but with teal also. This LUT is great for the travel video.
